Thomas Edward Mitton House
is a residential rehabilitation centre for people with acquired brain
injury, run by the Brain
Injury Rehabilitation Trust (BIRT).
Our individual, holistic rehabilitation programmes promote
the independence and self-esteem of our service users, working with the framework
of a neurobehavioural
model of rehabilitation.
|
|
BIRT’s programme is designed to help people re-learn skills lost
as a result of an acquired brain injury.
We will consider any person with an acquired brain
injury (whether caused by road accident, assault or illness).
Our programme is designed for people who, following careful assessment,
we consider have the potential for social reintegration.

rehabilitation
Following the initial assessment we then
plan a programme of rehabilitation
if appropriate. This is formally reviewed every three months.
Periods of rehabilitation usually last 6-12 months, though
each service user has unique needs and the length of rehabilitation
will vary.
The rehabilitation programmes take place in the main unit, though we also offer two transitional living units - community-based houses in residential areas
of Milton Keynes - which are a stepping stone to more independent living. Each house or bungalow caters for three service users and offers 24-hour staff support.

Transitional living units enable us to offer a seamless service for those service users aiming to make the transition to independent living in the community. Service users focus on effective life skills and making use of community facilities.
A placement in a transitional living unit would not normally last longer than 3-6 months. During that time, service users continue to receive clinical support, building on the skills they have developed during rehabilitation, but in a more home-like environment.
Service users form personal routines and structures to take with them when they move to a more independent setting. These familiar routines and structures help to reduce the anxiety and smooth the transition to more independent living later on.
We also offer three supported houses – permanent homes where residents who have reached their optimum level of independence can live with staff support. Supported housing is a long-term facility where people can stay for as long as they require the level of support available in that environment.
Vocational assessment, training and support is an important part of the rehabilitation programme.

staff team
We aim to provide the best outcome for
service users in the shortest possible time. Our clinical, therapeutic
programmes are implemented by an inter-disciplinary team providing
individual support based on the service user's unique needs.
This team includes neuropsychologists,
neuropsychiatrists, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists,
occupational therapists and vocational trainers, as well as
a range of co-ordinators and support staff. All the team work
under expert clinical supervision.
