Kent House, Aylesbury, Bucks
 |
|
Kent House is a long-term residential
rehabilitation centre for adults with a severe acquired brain injury,
run by the Brain Injury
Rehabilitation Trust (BIRT).
We offer a service to service users with an acquired brain
injury who require longer-term care and rehabilitation. Our service users
will normally have already experienced a period of intensive
rehabilitation before coming to Kent House.
|
|
Our
philosophy is that all people with brain injury have the potential for
continued rehabilitation, no matter how severe their injury or how long
ago it occurred. Each service user has an individual programme designed to meet
their own particular needs.

rehabilitation
We aim to promote the independence and
self-esteem of our service users within the framework of a neurobehavioural
model.
Kent House offers comfortable,
modern accommodation alongside unobtrusive clinical
supervision from expert staff. Each service user has their own large
room with en-suite facilities. Four service user live in one-bedroom
bungalows in the grounds.
Although Kent House can be a ‘home for
life’, many of our service users do move on to BIRT’s
supported
housing – ordinary houses in the community in which
two or three residents live with 24 hour staff supervision
and care.
We make extensive use of local facilities to
support individual rehabilitation programmes, including the
Stoke Mandeville Sports Stadium.
Many of our service users have vocational placements
with local employers.

Supported accommodation
The following supported house in the community is part of the
overall service offered by Kent
House.
Harvey Road, Aylesbury
This unit offers opportunities for service users to
continue rehabilitation in less supervised environments. This provide an ideal opportunity to consolidate the skills gained within the main unit, but in a more home-like environment. Service users continue to receive clinical support.

Events and news from Kent House
Holiday cottage
 |
For three years running, service users at
Harvey Road have chosen to holiday in Dorset. The peaceful holiday cottage
is set in a wood and is frequently visited by deer and wild ponies.
Nearby there are many places of interest and things to do.
At Lulworth Castle we saw some lovely old buildings and a demonstration
of combat through the ages. Actors dressed in costumes from different
historical periods and demonstrated how they went into battle. Roman gladiators,
knights in armour and armies from the 17th and 18th centuries demonstrated
how to use their swords, muskets, cannons etc. It was very noisy at times.
After Lulworth Castle we went to the relative peace of Lulworth
Cove. We sat on the beach and watched the sailing boats launch, canoes
and people swimming. The following day we went to Sea World at Weymouth.
Highlights here included the feeding of the penguins, sharks, seals and
turtles.

 |
Service user Michael O’Hara said: “Travelling was good. When we
got to Sea World it was very, very good.” Weymouth Town and Harbour area was
also visited.
We also had trips to the National Motor Museum and Beaulieu and
Stonehenge. Mark Grimmer said of the holiday: “It was interesting, I enjoyed
it”. Ian Wilson said the holiday was ‘alright’ and added he would like to go
again next year.
