medico-legal
The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust
(BIRT) provides a range of medico-legal services.
Expert witness reports
Our consultant clinical neuropsychologists and some other
senior clinicians are experienced expert witnesses familiar
with the Civil Procedure Rules, 1998. As practising clinicians
rather than professional experts, they maintain an up-to-date
and realistic perspective on potential for rehabilitation.
In-depth inter-disciplinary assessments and rehabilitation
We can provide detailed and extended assessments of someone's
ability to respond to rehabilitation, through admission to
one of our brain injury rehabilitation centres.
In this case there would be an initial assessment
and report from a consultant clinical neuropsychologist to
ensure the suitability of this type of service.
The cost of this is £350.
If someone is considered suitable and able
to benefit from such a service an estimated admission date
will be given.
Once someone is admitted, careful observations
and recordings of their difficulties and response to rehabilitation
will be made. Regular reviews will be held and reports provided
by the inter-disciplinary team under the clinical leadership
of the consultant clinical neuropsychologist.
If further rehabilitation is likely to be productive
this will be discussed with the client, the service user's family
and their legal representatives, and the goals will be established.
Full costings will be provided. Each stage in the rehabilitation
process will be carefully reviewed and reported upon.
As an additional facility to explore how a service user
can cope with greater independence, our brain injury rehabilitation
centres have access to transitional living units which are
ordinary houses located close to the main centres. These have
24 hour staffing and are supervised by the clinical team.
Service users can be transferred to these houses in order to assess
and enhance their ability to live independently. For some
this may be a prelude to returning home (with or without the
need for ongoing support) whilst for others it may demonstrate
their ability to live in supported housing.
The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust provides
a range of supported houses from single occupancy flats to
small ordinary homes for two to four people. We have larger
units for those with greater care needs than can be met in
the smaller supported houses.
