New Glasgow service opens

Our new service in Glasgow, Graham Anderson House, opened last month and has already received its first referrals.

The 25-bed independent brain injury hospital on the Springburn Road in Glasgow will provide an intensive neurobehavioural assessment and rehabilitation service for individuals with severe cognitive, physical and/or emotional problems following acquired brain injury.

'Reaction so far has been universally positive,' says Mike McPeake, BIRT's Development and Infrastructure Manager.

'The Scottish Care Commission has particularly commented on the design of the building, which we've created to be light and bright and with a view from virtually every room so that there's no sense of being confined.'

Personalised

All clients have single en-suite bathrooms with rooms that overlook either the courtyard or gardens. 'We've used a variety of fabrics and a pallete of colours so that no two rooms look identical - to create a more personalised feel.'

The new service has three separate dining areas, each with a different atmosphere, which will eventually offer different types of menu. Graham Anderson House also has a number of small and larger sitting areas, depending on whether people want company or peace and quiet.

Demand

At present there is a shortage of brain injury rehabilitation places in Scotland which means some Scottish people must currently go to England to receive appropriate care and support.

The new service has already received its first clients and around 20 more referrals are currently being processed.

The model of service follows that of York House, a service run by BIRT in partnership with mental health provider, The Retreat.

Furniture has been specially designed to look attractive but is also extremely robust. Other features include ceiling mounted heating panels rather than radiators.
