Stories of recovery

Here are just a few stories of the people who have benefited from our services. Thank you to them and their families, for agreeing to let us tell their stories.

John's story

John suffered a severe brain injury following an assault in June 2007. He was treated in hospital before being admitted to West Heath House in December 2007. Read John's story.

Mark Jackson

Mark's story
Mark Jackson is now 30 and had his accident when he was just 10 years old. The accident happened whilst in Devon, cycling through the countryside with his friend; without a bicycle helmet.

Mark had taken his cycling test the week before and failed his test, but decided to ride his bike anyway. A car hit him whilst turning the corner, leaving Mark in a coma for six months and the worst was feared.

Mark sustained multiple injuries but remarkably he pulled through. However his life was turned upside down as he had sustained a serious brain injury. He was initially unable to walk or feed himself.

The accident severely affected his family and put immense strain on his mother. Mark didn’t say a word for almost two and a half years but slowly he made progress, whilst living at home.

His Mother realised that Mark would need more help and he later visited several hospices, although they never felt like home. His mother understood that he needed rehabilitation to gain his full potential.

Eventually Mark found what he needed at The Woodmill, the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust's service at Cullompton, near Exeter. Thanks to the Trust's ground breaking rehabilitation services, Mark is now able to walk using a frame and loves working at a local garden centre on work placement. He swims regularly and is studying Humanities at college.

Mark’s mother Julia says: "Mark's accident turned our lives upside down but thanks to his determination and the wonderful staff at The Woodmill, Mark is settled and very happy. He has regained many life skills and is now keen to take on new challenges."

Rob's story

Rob, 23, who spent nine months at our Daniel Yorath House service, writes about his experience of rehabilitation. Read Rob's account.

Iain's story

Iain Sutherland tells his story of recovery from a brain injury caused by an unprovoked attack in 2003. Read Iain's account.

Rupert Johnston

Rupert Johnston
In 1996, Rupert Johnston was involved in an horrific road accident, which resulted in physical and cognitive impairments. Since leaving hospital, Rupert has benefited from BIRT’s intensive rehabilitation programme, firstly at Thomas Edward Mitton House in Milton Keynes and now at Kent House in Aylesbury.

Prior to his accident, Rupert was a talented French Horn player, and comes from a family of talented musicians. Through his ongoing hard work and the support of staff over many years of rehabilitation, Rupert has continued to progress towards increasing his level of independence and self-control, and engaging in musical activities. He continues to enjoy playing music, including French Horn and keyboard.

‘Rupert’s ongoing work towards his rehabilitation goals is commendable,’ says Chris Wood, Service Manager at Kent House. ‘With support, he has continued to engage in activities that he has always enjoyed, including his musical interests, socialising with friends and enjoying time with his family.’
