Goole Neuro Rehabilitation Centre
17 September 2007
The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust (BIRT) has joined
forces with the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
(NLAG) to establish a new neurological rehabilitation service based at Goole
and District Hospital.
Opening in October 2007, this new facility addresses the
current shortage of specialist provision in this field.
Who is the centre for?
The model of clinical assessment and rehabilitation is designed to meet the needs of people who require post-acute rehabilitation, where service users are admitted directly from neurosurgical or acute medical/surgical services, and also of those people seeking community integration rehabilitation.
The aim is to provide a continuous link for each individual through their pathway of care from in-patient services through to re-integration into community.
The new centre is situated in Ward 4 of the Goole and District Hospital and provides:
14 bed spaces
ground floor access, with its own dedicated entrance
easy access to a range of key NHS services, eg psychiatry, diagnostics and dietetics
additional accommodation for therapy activities and practising daily living skills, as well as for recreational purposes
a number of small lounges.
The 14-bedded facility provides post acute and community integration rehabilitation for people with acquired brain injury, following BIRT's well-established neuro-behavioural model.
Under this model, each client has an individual rehabilitation plan, which includes structured learning programmes, practising daily living skills, community access skills, behavioural management techniques, social skills training and vocational training and support.
Located approximately two miles from Goole town centre, the new centre will benefit from ample car parking in the hospital grounds and regular bus services into Goole, which is also served by good mainline rail links.
How will the centre be resourced?
The centre is staffed by a multi-disciplinary team, managed by BIRT and linking directly to the NLAG Community Rehabilitation Medicine Service.
The Consultants in Rehabilitation Medicine will retain medical responsibilities for their own patients and a Consultant Neuropsychologist with experience of the neurobehavioural model is responsible for the neurobehavioural service.
Other members of the fully-trained team will include physiotherapists, occupational therapists, a speech and language therapist, nurses and a number of rehabilitation support workers.
