Who is the service for?
Kerwin Court offers rehabilitation for adults with acquired brain injury. The rehabilitation programme provides a full brain injury service including:
< br> br>
assessment of an individual's needs
on-going rehabilitation, which includes family and friends as appropriate
transitional living arrangements to support people to return to the community.
The service is designed for people who have potential to increase their independence and social participation. An experienced staff team will help each individual relearn skills lost as a result of the injury, or acquire new skills to help lessen the impact of the injury on the goals they aim to achieve.
There can be up to 23 service users resident at Kerwin Court. During 2009, nearly 60% of service users admitted were under 50 at the time of admission with nearly a third being under 30. 41% of service users admitted were aged over 50, reflecting a higher proportion of people with stroke being admitted.
Approximately half of the people admitted during 2009 had suffered a traumatic brain injury (e.g. falls, road traffic accidents and blast injuries). We also admit people after stroke, hypoxic injury (due to lack of oxygen) and encephalitis.

What does the service offer?
The service offers a post-acute neurobehavioural service, including assessment, intensive rehabilitation and transitional living arrangements. The emphasis is on active community rehabilitation. We can also provide a continuing rehabilitation resource with a lower level of clinical supervision for service users whose needs cannot yet be managed in the community.
Rehabilitation follows BIRT's well-established neurobehavioural model. The rehabilitation programme is designed to meet individual needs after detailed assessment and goal setting.
There are individual and group sessions within the programme. The program will include a full range of activities and goal areas, depending on individual need, including:
activities of daily living
personal shopping and accessing the community
health and fitness
communication and social skills
work skills
adjustment to brain injury
Group topics may include:
planning and daily orientation
arts and crafts
managing memory problems
managing anger
lifestyle and Healthy Living
understanding brain injury
relaxation and wellbeing
body balance
gardening and opportunities to work in the community
discussion and communication skills
There is a service user forum on a regular basis for everyone to get together and participate in the day to day running of the unit.

Evaluating success
We evaluate our service all the time. From this information we can show that during 2008, all service users were discharged with less need for supervision and were more able to live independently than they were when they were admitted.
We also request feedback on our services from family members, service users and referrers. During 2008 the overall satisfaction rating from family members was 92%. Service users were generally positive about the building and the way staff treated them, and referrers were universally positive.
